5 days in Tokyo: the perfect first-timer itinerary
Estimated budget
US$1,650/ person (Mid-range)
Excludes international flights
Five days is the sweet spot for Tokyo — enough to walk the major neighborhoods without burning out, with one buffer day for whatever Tokyo throws at you. The AI tunes this itinerary to your dates, budget, and energy level.
The hardest part of a first Tokyo trip isn't logistics — it's resisting the urge to do everything. Five days is enough for one good crack at the city; ten days is when you start chasing day trips. This plan picks the fight that's actually winnable.
Why we don't change hotels
Most "5 days in Tokyo" itineraries hop you between three properties to "see different sides of the city." Don't. Tokyo's transit is so good that any centrally-located hotel puts the entire city inside a 30-minute radius — Shibuya base reaches Asakusa in 35 minutes by Ginza line. The day you save not packing/unpacking is the day you actually walk Kamakura.
What we left out (on purpose)
- Tsukiji's inner market is gone (moved to Toyosu in 2018) — Outer Market is what's still good.
- Shibuya Sky is overpriced for the view; if you only do one observation deck, do the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku — same skyline, free.
- Robot Restaurant is closed. Stop reading 2018 lists.
What the AI swaps for you
Tell it you're vegetarian, traveling with parents, jet-lagged on arrival, or budget-conscious and it will substitute every meal, hotel, and afternoon. The structure of the trip (one neighborhood per day, buffer on day 5) stays — what changes is the bookings under it.

Tokyo trip planning FAQ
Is 5 days enough for Tokyo?
For a first visit focused on Tokyo itself — yes. If you want to add Kyoto, Hakone, or Osaka, plan for 9–10 days minimum.
Where should I stay in Tokyo for 5 days?
Shibuya or Shinjuku for first-timers — both have great transit and walkable nightlife. Ginza is calmer and more upscale. Asakusa is cheaper but further from nightlife.
How much does 5 days in Tokyo cost?
Mid-range trips run $1,500–$2,000 per person excluding flights. Budget travelers can do it for $850; luxury starts around $3,500.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. Major neighborhoods, hotels, and most restaurants have English menus or pointing-friendly displays. Google Translate's camera mode handles the rest.
